Military commander of Ansar Al-Din: ‘Our war isn’t for independence, it is for Islam’

Omar Hamaha, the military commander of Jamaat Ansar Al-Din, said in a video recorded on 2 - 3 April, standing among a crowd: ‘our war is a jihad and it’s a legitimate war under Islam. We are against the rebel movements and secessions. We are against all revolutions that are all not under the name of Islam. We came to practice the rituals of Islam under the name of Allah. What we want is not Azawad but Islam. Independence is Islam. It is the real independence. It is practicing the Sharia from dawn to sun set. It’s is not being Arab or Touareg, or black or white. It is under the name of Islam’.

On the other hand, a spokesman for Ansar Al-Din said that the movement have released 315 captives from the Malian army, including the governor of Kidal and his deputy, and 7colonels. The spokesman added that the movement decided to issue an amnesty for the prisoners who were captured during the its attack on the city of Kidal last Friday.
